Oh yeah. As I read this my chest is starting to stick out a little bit; my back is starting to straighten up and now I’m starting to stand erect, because God says you can be strong and courageous when facing a giant mission because…
Paul is already sensing that this is going to be his last visit and he wants to encourage the church stay rooted in the gospel and to keep the urgency of the mission to making disciples as their focus. This should be the question on our minds as we read this story as well. How do we help our church grow and what’s essential to fulfilling the mission?
The devil presents Jesus with the glories of the kingdoms of the world, because he had claimed the earth as his kingdom, since getting Adam and Eve to fall into sin. He now knows that Jesus has been anointed by the Holy Spirit to be Messiah, the King who has come to reclaim the earth as the new Adam and establish His Kingdom.
The devil is basically saying he can quote scripture too. He attempts to get Jesus to act independently from His Father to presumptuously put Himself in a place where God would have to intervene to save Him.
Most people when they see my son say how nice and quiet he is. And its true. He is generally a very good and laid back little boy. But wait till he gets hungry for some breast milk and you will see my son get cranky and fussy.
In order for you to truly feel the weight of what Jesus just said, remember who He is speaking to and the context of the His message. Jesus is establishing His Kingdom and the ultimate enemy of His listeners are the Romans. They want a violent military overthrow. Jesus says here is how we’re going to conquer Rome… love them. What?!
Jesus says, “Contrary to popular belief, I have not come to do away with the law.” He is not here, merely talking about the 10 commandments, but the Law, meaning the first five books of the Old Testament written by Moses. The Prophets, were the rest of the Old Testament books. Jesus, says rather, I’ve come to fulfill it.
It’s June 2017 and Donald Trump is President of the United States of America. As he is on his quest to make America great again, a young charismatic leader starts a tour across the country winning the hearts of the masses by meeting their needs and offering a message of hope. The core of his message is “my administration is at hand!”
Jesus is now focusing our attention on something absolutely magnificent. Something so critical to understanding the entire Bible. He directs us to the name of God. Names in the bible refer to character. Jesus is referring to the character of God.
My favorite time of the day, next to being with Jesus in the morning, is coming home at the end of a long day, opening the door and seeing my son run around the corner to me, nearly falling over, with a big smile on his face and his hands up in the air and jumping into my arms. It is the best feeling in the world.
“And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease among the people. Then His fame went throughout all..."
“And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding; and the door was shut. “Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, Lord, open to us!’
Then all those virgins arose and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ But the wise answered, saying, ‘No, lest there should not be enough for us and you;
It was my wedding day just over 10 years ago and to everyones surprise, I was unusually calm. What added to my calm was the fact that both the bride and I had arrived with our parties early to the venue.
The angel tells Joseph not to be afraid to take Mary as His wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. Then he gives Joseph a powerful revelation about the work of this Baby in verse 21…
Some time ago I was driving in the car with my wife Deedre and the Lord convicted me to due a series on the gospel of Matthew. As we were driving I started reflecting on the genealogy of Matthew chapter 1. Often when we read the Bible we tend to skip over the genealogies as if they are not telling us something important.
